Holiday work - Part 1: Understanding the ‘The Elderly Challenge’

1.) Explain in your own words, the FOUR key recommendations of the report.

a. Housing for Seniors
The elderly would have more housing options and they would have a place to stay which they can afford. The elderly would also be closer to their family.

b. Accessibility for Seniors
The Elderly will be able to move and travel around their neighbourhood easily. There will be facilities that cater to the elderly. They can also go in and out of their houses easily without much hassle. Stuff like walkways, lifts and Singapore transport system (such as the MRT and bus) would be user friendly to the elderly.

c. Caring for the Seniors
This will give health care to the Seniors. They will receive medical attention at a efficient and cheap rate. So that the elderly will be able to afford to see the doctor. It also helps the Seniors to easier access to the doctor.

d. Opportunities for the Senior
This allows the Elderly to have Opportunities to lead a active and therefore a healthy lifestyle. They would be more involved in events such as morning workouts for the elderly by the community groups. Thus, they will have more friends and they would be happy.

2.) State ONE way that the CAI report is recommending to make our public housing more elderly-friendly
-It is that they suggest that there will be a more comprehensive range of housing options which will meet the needs of the Elderly.

3.)State TWO ways on how we can ensure that the quality of elderly care here in Singapore is affordable
-We can ensure that by having the government to give some money to the elderly that the money can only be used for treating their health and if the Elderly needs more money they can apply to the government.

-There can be a law that makes whenever a elderly pays for medical care that it would be cheaper than the normal rate adults are paying.

4.)After reading the CAI report, what do you are the THREE things that you can do, as an SST student, to help overcome these elderly challenges

-I can encourage Elderly, staring with my grandparents to exercise at the facilities provided and also ask them to participate in events for the elderly, etc morning workout for the elderly.
-I can help the ELderly when ever they are in need, etc. trouble coming down the stairs.
-I can also can come up with activities for the Elderly.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 4

We all know that the elderly usually have a difficulty walking and they are not as agile as they used to be. I noticed a elderly man who was on wheel chair taking a bus. I also noticed that there was a ramp on the bus that could be folded and unfolded. I think that this is a good invention and it makes the bus wheel chair friendly. It also has a bus button that is lower so that the wheel chair bound man could press it and he could travel on his own.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 3

I have Observe Elderly male and females exercising on the hard court outside my house. They usually play music and exercise with a fan or sword. They usually do it in the evening when it is cooler. This is very calming and also helps the elderly to work out. It is not very stressful and very healthy for the elderly. There is a routine that they use and exercises about once a week. I think that the government should encourage such activities. They can encourage it by having such exercising events or carry such courses at a cheap rate or for free by the community centers.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 2

I often see elderly exercising at the senior citizens corner, usually in the morning. I think that the government is very smart making these senior citizens corner and encouraging the elderly to exercise. It will make the elderly more healthy. There are also other ways to encourage elderly to exercise by having walking or exercising events for the elderly. It will not only make the elderly healthy but also happier as they can meet their friends through these events.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 1

I often see a group of elderly, mostly males sitting at the void deck playing chess. I think that playing chess is a very good hobby and it allows one to think. I think that we can encourage the elderly to play chess by creating chess competitions for the elderly in community clubs and also have chess table provided for the elderly in void decks.

Alternative Energy Source

Possible alternative energy sources that Singapore can adopt
1.)Solar energyimgres.jpg
Some people in Singapore have already adopted this alternative energy source as Singapore has the technology and the equipment to convert solar energy into electricity. However, it is dependent on the weather if there is no solar energy, no electricity will be converted.

2.)Biomass
It is deprived form dead organisms or trash such as used paper. Biomass can be converted into electricity. Using this technique, is environmental friendly and also can save space.

3.)Wind
Like solar energy, it is dependent on the weather. If there is no wind, no energy would be converted. A windmill is used.
